Senior Manager, Data Pipeline Developer

Department: Admin-Information Technol
Location: Washington, DC

Since 1984, Share Our Strength® has led the fight against hunger and poverty by inspiring and organizing individuals and businesses to share their strengths. Today, through the No Kid Hungry campaign, Share Our Strength is ending childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need. No child should go hungry in America – we’re on our way to making that a reality and we want you to join us. We’re bold, creative, always open to new ideas, and 100% dedicated to our mission. If that sounds like you, we’d like you to consider becoming part of our team.

As a Data Pipeline Developer, you will be responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining data ingests into our AWS-based data lake. You will be the lead in-house technical expert with regard to designing and developing data pipelines, connecting our data sets, and ensuring our reporting dashboards are backed by an accurate, relevant, well-structured data architecture. You must be able to apply your expertise to help Share Our Strength set up and maintain data ingestion portals connected to external data sources; a centralized data lake where the data is indexed; and a collection of analytic and business intelligence tools reporting out of the data lake. Reporting to the Director for Enterprise Data Management, you will collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to support an organization of approximately 300 total staff. You are a strong technical expert with outstanding customer service, communications, and collaborative skills.

This position is preferably based in Washington, D.C. (hybrid two days in the office); but could be fully remote for the right candidate living outside of the DC area 30 miles or more. The position offers a range of $100k-$110K. Exact compensation within the stated salary range may vary based on skills, experience, internal equity, and geographical location.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical expert: You will be intimately familiar with developing and configuring services in AWS, developing and deploying Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) scripts, employing both APIs and flat file transfers, database design, and connecting AWS-based data sets to visualization tools, such as PowerBI. You will also be familiar with AWS security controls and identity management protocols.

Seasoned communicator: You will be bridging gaps between end users and the technology tools they need, so your data architecture expertise will help identify and address impediments to user adoption. Empathy and urgency are core values in the way you respond to users’ issues. You’ll also show strong 1-on-1 written and verbal communication skills, especially in describing technical issues to a non-technical audience and teaching new technologies and describing system outages and emergencies.

Accomplished collaborator: Leading by listening will be a daily leadership trait along with a leadership style that combines the best of technical competency and customer service. You will work with a wide variety of stakeholders, including external consultants, who possess an equally wide range of technical competence, so you will need to establish your expertise and build trust without drowning partners in technical jargon.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, and at least 1 relevant industry credential, preferably the AWS Certified Developer certification.
  • Architecture (data and cloud):
    • Experience architecting, designing and programming applications in an AWS Cloud environment.

    • Experience reading through API documentations and extracting the information needed from external data sources. Setting up and maintaining automated jobs in the cloud and troubleshooting them when you fail.
  • Solutions Integration:
    • Familiarity with back end structure of many of the tools commonly used by non-profit organizations. A must-have is familiarity with Salesforce and Google Analytics, and nice-to-have is familiarity with the Blackbaud suite of tools, Quorum, ADP, and Microsoft O365.
    • Exposure to business intelligence tools such as PowerBI.
  • Professional Project Experience:
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), including clear, persuasive, and dynamic communication skills with various stakeholders.
    • Proactive and a self-starter with excellent problem-solving and implementation skills. Especially important is the ability to experiment and iterate, while on the road to building sustainable products.
    • Successful track record managing multiple complex projects simultaneously and demonstrated ability to initiate, organize, and prioritize.
    • Poise and professionalism in working effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
    • Ability to explain complex technical topics to a non-technical audience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Regular office conditions, consisting primarily of standard office hours Monday through Friday. Some night and weekend work is expected when servicing the network infrastructure to take advantage of periods of low utilization.
